In 1946, the territory, now known as Chad, became an autonomous republic within the French Community. With the distance of its seas and the large bodies of desserts, Chad is soetimes referred to as " The Dead Heart of Africa". Like many countries around the world, they celebrate their country's Independence Day to honor the day of independence. El idayven though Chad's independence was attained on August 11, 1960, they celebrate Independence Day on January 11 to escape the monsoon season. Events like Easter Monday and Christmas are big holidays to the Chadians as a state holiday. Their Easter celebrations are basically the same, but every year the date changes and involves longer ceremonies and with prayer and music. Christmas to them is the same as ours with the present giving, church visits etc.
